Medical:  combining vowels

A question was asked the other day about the use of the letter "O" as combining vowel between a root word and a suffix. Why do some medical terms not use an "O" to combine the root and suffix? For example, Hemat/o/logy uses the "O" combining vowel. Wheras Gastr/ic does not.
