When the suffix begins with a vowel (-ic, -itis, -ac), the combining vowel is dropped. Note that this rule only applies to root words that begin with a vowel. It is necessary to keep the combining vowel between two root words, even if the second root word begins with a vowel (such as gastr/o/enter/itis).
